Every name has a meaning. Ours begins with a question:
What is space? Where does it begin and where does it end?
And more importantly: Can we imagine a space without borders?
What Does “La-Mekân” Studio Say?
The word "la-mekan" is of Arabic origin. It means "without space," but this definition doesn't just refer to the absence of physical space. It also suggests that an idea, a state of being, is not limited by space.
In Sufism, this concept represents God's omnipresence and independence from time and space. For us, "Lamekan" is the name of a space where thought and imagination are not confined by walls, where rules and patterns can be transcended. Design is not limited to units of measurement, lines, or codes. Sometimes, an emotion, a color, or a space can be central to a design. At Lamekan Studio, we set out with precisely this understanding.
What Does Lamekan “Studio” Mean?
There is a very special reason why we chose the word Studio. The place where most of the time is spent in architecture education, where most of the production is done, where most of the thinking and designing takes place until the morning: Studio .
There, you don't just draw. You dream there, you criticize, you start over. The story of a place first turns into paper, then into the mind, and finally into reality.
For us, the studio is the place where design takes its first breath , where excitement and effort come together. Today, we work at Lamekan Studio with this feeling, without losing the passion of the first day .
From Placelessness to Place
Laplace may seem like a paradox: a place that is both spaceless and projects space. But that's precisely why it 's meaningful. We advocate for limitlessness, because every design begins in the mind. It's felt before it's built. And only through free thought can space truly exist.
Our duty as designers is not only to build physical structures, but also to prepare the ground for emotions, experiences and lived experiences.
That's why "La-mekan" reminds us every day: Every project is a beginning. Every line is a discovery. Every gap is a potential space.
